NOTRE-DAME-DES-PRAIRIES, Que. — A woman and toddler were killed Wednesday morning when their SUV collided with a Via train northeast of Montreal.
The crash happened in heavy fog just before 10 a.m. at a level crossing about 45 minutes from the city.
The SUV was smashed to pieces by the force of the impact with the train, which was en route to eastern Quebec from Montreal.
The woman in her 30s, and the young child, were pronounced dead on the scene.
Paramedics transported the Via engineer to hospital for treatment of shock.
Twenty passengers on the train were taken to their destination by bus.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the collision.
