Aboriginal grad rates ‘dismal’
By Michael Mui, QMI Agency

(QMI FILE)

VANCOUVER - With a “dismal” number of First Nations students graduating, the Vancouver School Board is implementing a tracking system to help bring them back to class.

Only one-third of aboriginal students are graduating, with the rate dropping 1.3% last year, according to a school board report.

The same report sampled groups of aboriginal pupils in elementary schools and found the students are three times more likely to miss class, and tend to have 20% lower literacy and numeracy scores than non-aboriginal students.
