MONTREAL - The godfather of the Montreal Mafia is sitting under the hot Caribbean sun in the days before anti-corruption hearings that have him on the witness list.

Police sources tell QMI Agency that Vito Rizzuto flew to Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, on Wednesday morning.

The 66-year-old has been named by several witnesses at the Charbonneau Commission into corruption and collusion in the construction industry, which resumes on Monday.

Rizzuto is scheduled to take the stand at an undisclosed date.

He returned to Canada last fall after serving several years in a U.S. prison for a 1981 mob massacre, but Canadian officials have never charged him with a serious crime. They've nonetheless been keeping a close eye on him since his return, and authorities were informed of his vacation plans, sources say.

Witnesses have testified that the Rizzuto crime family received a 2% to 3% cut from public infrastructure contracts in Montreal and suburban Laval.
