Ashley Smith tried to strangle self multiple times a day: guard

A coroner's inquest has released explicit video of the abuse of jailed teen Ashley Smith who killed herself in a cell. Frame grab from video.



TORONTO – Ashley Smith would try and strangle herself up to eight times on a bad day, a coroner's inquest heard.

Smith, 19 strangled herself to death on Oct. 19 2007 while guards at the Grand Valley prison in Kitchener watched.

The inquest reviewed video showing guards dealing with Smith on June 7, 2007.

The footage shows prison guard Blaine Phibbs and other corrections officers dealing with Smith in her segregated cell as she was tying ligatures around her neck.
