RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson is trying to boost Mountie morale after allegations last week by human-rights campaigners that RCMP officers sexually assaulted and abused hundreds of aboriginal women in northern B.C.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said last week the RCMP complaints commission has been asked to evaluate allegations in a report published by Human Rights Watch which alleged the RCMP abused women and girls in northern B.C.

Human Rights Watch said it did not identify the alleged victims of abuse out of concern for their safety.

In response to that report Paulson sent out an e-mail message to the force's 29,000 members, a copy of which was obtained by QMI Agency, in which he tells the Mounties they do "great work" and that he stands behind them.

"My message to you today is -- don't worry about it, I've got your back," Paulson said in the message sent out late last week.
