No jail time for role in soldier's death
By KEVIN MARTIN, QMI Agency

A military panel found Maj. Darryl Watts guilty of unlawfully causing bodily harm and two charges of negligent performance of military duty, but acquitted him of manslaughter at at Mewata Armouries in Calgary on Tuesday Dec 4, 2012. (QMI Agency/DARREN MAKOWICHUK)

CALGARY - Calgary military reservist Darryl Watts won't have to serve jail time for his role in a deadly training exercise in Afghanistan three years ago, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Instead, Watts was stripped of his rank as major in the Canadian Forces and reduced two levels to a lieutenant.

Cmdr. Peter Lamont said the jail term sought by the prosecution was too harsh, but Watts required more than the simple reprimand sought by the defence.
