CALGARY - Curious apes raised some ruckus in a Calgary Zoo kitchen Friday, leaving a zookeeper injured.
It’s not clear, said zoo officials, exactly how an unknown number of gorillas ventured into a kitchen connected to their enclosure, about 9:15 a.m.
“There are different doors ... there are a lot of different areas where that could have happened,” said zone curator Dr. Malu Celli.
“They’re very intelligent animals and they will investigate their surroundings.”
Upon discovery of the incident, an experienced zookeeper called for the Emergency Response Team and when they arrived only one gorilla remained, which was secured.
The zookeeper sustained what is believed to be minor injuries — he’s expected back on the job next week.
While the incident was occurring, the zoo’s Rainforest Building was locked down for just over 15 minutes.
