Calgary zookeeper fired for not latching door properly

CALGARY - The Calgary Zoo said Wednesday it fired a staff member for not latching a door properly and, in turn, allowing gorillas to enter a kitchen area last week.

Last Friday, the gorillas briefly gained access to a kitchen adjacent to their enclosure, minorly injuring a zookeeper.

While the public was at no point at risk, the mishap could have been far more serious, zoo curator Dr. Malu Celli said.

“There could have been terribly tragic consequences,” said Celli.

“It is extremely fortunate that neither the gorillas nor any staff members were seriously injured during the incident.”
