Family members of Cardinal Marc Ouellet said they were proud, relieved and disappointed the priest from a small Quebec town was not chosen to lead the Catholic Church.

The Cardinal’s brother, Roch Ouellet, congratulated the new Pope, Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio, after hearing the news Wednesday.

He told reporters in La Motte, Que., 600 km north of Montreal, that their mother was relieved to hear that she wasn’t going to have to give up her son to the world.

“When she learned that (Ouellet) wasn’t going to be pope she smiled,” said Roch. “She said that she gets to have her son back.”
