The police chief remembered his officer killed in a crash in Guelph, Ont., Thursday as a vibrant woman with a great smile.

Const. Jennifer Kovach, 26, crossed the median in her cruiser and struck a city bus head-on while responding to a call to assist another officer at around 12:30 a.m., police said. She was pronounced dead in hospital, while the bus driver suffered minor injuries.

"It's hard to see someone with that much potential taken from us so soon," police Chief Bryan Larkin said at a conference Thursday afternoon.

Kovach joined the force in 2009 and grew up in Guelph -- a small city about 90 km west of Toronto.

Her mother, Gloria, is a city councillor.

Thousands of Canadians -- most who didn't know the constable personally -- offered their condolences online.
