VATICAN CITY – Cardinal Marc Ouellet said he was “relieved” he wasn’t chosen Pope by his fellow Cardinals during this week’s conclave.

“I can tell you that the night after (the conclave) I slept better than I did the previous night; there were some difficult nights,” he said, during an exclusive interview with QMI Agency in his office in Vatican City.”

Ouellet said that since his name circulated as a possible successor to Pope Benedict XVI, “I was psychologically prepared” to assume the role.

“I had to be prepared if it turned out to be me,” he said. However, he said he is living quite well with the results.

“It relieved me,” Ouellet confided.
