KINGSTON, Ont. — The abandoned prison that once housed Canadian killers like Paul Bernardo and Russell Williams could be day be a major tourism attraction complete with a museum and waterfront shopping.

Former Kingston Penitentiary warden Monty Bourke is looking to Melbourne, Australia, where the old jail in that city has become a major tourism attraction by diversifying and embracing private investment.

“Turning Kingston Pen into a museum, the whole thing, isn’t going to work,” said Bourke, who was the prison’s top official from 1997 to 2002.

“I believe it would have to have investments from the private sector, whether it’s retail space or accommodation. It’s a massive complex. This is waterfront property. This is prime.”
