CALGARY - Eleanor the zebra has died at the Calgary Zoo just days after two penguins passed away.
Eleanor, a Hartmann’s mountain zebra, was a new arrival at the zoo.
“Sadly, late in the afternoon on Thursday, after having been observed to be fine throughout the day, Eleanor was found dead in the pasture,” the zoo announced Friday through Facebook.
“An immediate post-mortem examination was carried out late last night, unfortunately confirming what was suspected and what every horse owner fears - a twisted gut.”
The zoo further explained the cause of death as “a medical condition that occurs all too often and unexpectedly in horse species and can kill quickly.”
Eleanor and Lubs, another zebra, arrived at the Calgary Zoo in late June -- right before the city was hit hard by flooding, leaving the St. George’s Island-located facility in a bad state.
