“Now I need a nap.”
Those were the words of 15-year-old Ashleigh Beacham, of Komoka, Ont., after finishing a grueling 18-hour swim across Lake Ontario.
The teenager completed a 52-kilometre swim just minutes before 8 p.m. Sunday, coming out of the water at Marilyn Bell Park on Toronto’s shoreline.
Ashleigh began her swim from Queen’s Beach at Niagara-on-the-Lake at 1:30a.m. Sunday.
She was not allowed to hold on to anything and has treaded water while taking breaks to eat or drink.
“There was a time I didn’t know if I’d make it, but I persevered,” said the marathon swimmer, who was tucked inside a blanket. “I just kept thinking of Josh.”
Josh, her motivation, is the Make-A-Wish child who will be going to Disney World with his family now because of Ashleigh’s efforts.
Ashleigh’s mom and dad were in separate boat alongside their daughter and had extra support with them, such as a nurse, a doctor and her coaches.
