A Thai police officer who admitted to murdering a Calgary man has been sentenced to 37 1/2 years in prison, according to a report.
Uthai Dechawiwat pleaded guilty last month to the slaying of 25-year-old Leo Del Pinto on Jan. 6, 2008, in a bar in the Thai tourist town of Pai.
Del Pinto was shot dead when the cop tried to break up an argument between him and his girlfriend, Carly Reisig, 24, who was also hospitalized with a bullet wound, according to a report in the Hong Kong Standard on Monday.
Dechawiwat is already serving a 25-year sentence for fatally beating his pregnant 18-year-old wife in September 2010, Del Pinto's father, Ernie, told QMI Agency earlier this month.
With his plea, Dechawiwat appears to have dodged a possible death penalty or a life sentence.
