TORONTO – The cronut burger is cooked.
Epic Burgers and Waffles reopened Tuesday but the infamous cronut burger that caused a massive food-borne illness outbreak a week ago is off the menu.
Toronto Public health confirmed Tuesday that the maple bacon jam on the top of the cronut burger was the source of the Staphylococcus aureus toxin that made CNE visitors sick. The jam came from Le Dolci - a Dundas St. W. bakery that had partnered with Epic Burgers to roll out the decadent menu item.
Dr. Lisa Berger, the city's associate medical officer of health, said Le Dolci had closed voluntarily and is "fully co-operating" with public health.
It still isn't clear what went wrong with the jam – made of mostly bacon, maple syrup, water and brown sugar – to spark the outbreak.
"We do know for sure that the maple bacon jam was contaminated. We're looking into all aspects of the different ingredients of the jam, how it was processed, how it was transported, how it was handled on site," Berger said Tuesday.
Public health has found problems at both Epic Burgers and Le Dolci.
"There were some temperature-control issues both at the supplier and on site,” Berger said.
Around 223 people contacted public health to report they were ill after eating at the CNE last week. Berger said there have been 79 confirmed cases of people being made sick by the cronut burger - six of those people ended up in hospital.
Berger said public health gave Epic Burgers the green light to reopen Tuesday after an inspection and having its staff undergo further food handling retraining.
"We feel quite confident that Epic Burgers and Waffles, the products they are serving are safe and that the public can eat safely both at (Epic Burgers) and at the CNE," she said.
In a statement on the company's Facebook page, Epic Burgers stressed public health confirmed their burgers "continue to be safe and of a high standard" and that Le Dolci is no longer used as a supplier.
"The jam was used as a topping solely on one of our menu items, the cronut burger," the statement read.
"As a result of this finding Epic Burgers and Waffles have decided to remove the cronut burger from our menu and we will no longer do business with the aforementioned supplier."
