A Vancouver cop has been charged with assault in connection with an arrest earlier this year — caught on tape — in which a suspect was punched in the face.
Local resident Andishae Akhavan was cycling home the evening of March 25 when he was stopped for going through a red light and riding without a helmet or a light, his friend Mike Schwarz said on Facebook.
Schwarz also posted video footage in which Akhavan is seen being punched in the face while being arrested by two officers.
An assault charge was sworn against Const. Ismail Bhabha in court Friday. He also faces the possibility of being charged under the Police Act.
Bhabha, who used to be a cop in the U.K., was honoured by the British Transport Police in 2008 for apprehending a violent man believed to be harassing a mother and daughter at Kings Cross subway station.
Bhabha was off-duty at the time, and received serious injuries to his face.
