WINNIPEG - An eyewitness got an early-morning shock when he saw a man jump off his balcony during a fire in a downtown Winnipeg apartment complex across the street from where he lives.
Firefighters responded to a fire at an apartment complex on Donald Street near St. Mary's Avenue on Sunday around 8 a.m. The man, wearing only his underwear, jumped to the small roof of an adjoining building four storeys above street level.
"I heard all the sirens and didn't think much of it," said Robert Pearson, who lives at 100 Chateau. "I got up to make some coffee and looked out my window and it was, 'Holy smokes, smoke is billowing out of the building. There really is a fire.'
"Then, I saw a guy jump through the smoke and he was yelling and screaming like he was burned. It was only about a 15-foot jump, so I don't think he would've been yelling and screaming like that it if he had just sprained an ankle or something like that."
