More pieces of the wrecked van belonging to two missing Canadians in New Zealand have been found, local media reports.

A fuel tank believed to belong to the camper van the couple was driving washed ashore more than 50 km from where it left the road, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Joanna Lam, 24, and her boyfriend Connor Hayes, 25, went missing on Sept. 10 while they were travelling New Zealand's South Island.

Police had already found the van's real wheels and chassis at the bottom of a gorge, but haven't located the body or engine of the vehicle.

The fuel pump was found 7 km north of the mouth of the Haast River, the Herald reported.

Early Wednesday morning, New Zealand time, 16 volunteers and police officers set out to scour the river and below the gorge, the paper reported. There are two boats in the river and a helicopter is searching from the air.

The paper also quoted a police spokesperson saying a seat may have been seen “about halfway” down the rivermouth.

It's still not known if the couple were in the van when it left the road.

Police are expected to give a press conference Wednesday afternoon in New Zealand.
