After 178 years housing some of Canada’s worst criminals, Kingston Penitentiary is definitely closing at the end of this month.
Correctional Service Canada (CSC) confirmed to QMI Agency that the penitentiary’s last day as an active prison will be Monday, Sept. 30.
However, the decommissioning of the facility will take much longer, expected to be completed by the end of the next fiscal year.
“Kingston Penitentiary will cease operations as a federal correctional facility on Sept. 30, 2013,” Kyle Lawlor, acting media relations and outreach adviser for CSC’s Ontario division, wrote in an e-mail.
“As such, commencing on Oct. 1, 2013, the facility will no longer be used to house offenders under federal jurisdiction. The decommissioning of the institution will be completed by the end of the fiscal year 2014.”
