WINNIPEG — Five small kittens found abandoned in a plastic bag Friday are recovering at the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter.
“They’re doing very well for being extremely tiny and without their mom,” said Carla Martinelli-Irvine, the shelter’s director.
A Winnipeg resident found the kittens in a bag in a back lane and brought them to a nearby veterinarian. Healthy but malnourished, they were transported to the shelter to recuperate.
They’re so small, the kittens are believed to be less than six weeks old.
“We’re guessing closer to five weeks, because they’re so small. They fit in the palm of your hand,” said Martinelli-Irvine.
Shelter volunteers have to hand-feed them.
“We’re watching them very closely — when you get to that size, it doesn’t take much to tip the scale.”
The four females and one male kitten are named Minnow, Sebastien, Ariel, Skuttle, and Flounder.
The kittens are expected to stay at the shelter until they’re at least eight weeks old.
