OTTAWA — The Mounties have launched a new investigation into Sen. Mike Duffy for giving contracts totalling nearly $65,000 to a longtime pal on disability who police say did little or no work and claimed he would have worked for free.

In court documents filed Tuesday, police said they stumbled onto the latest twist while investigating the Senate spending scandal involving Duffy and others in the upper chamber over housing and travel expense claims.

Police identified Duffy's friend as Gerald Donohue who told investigators he was given a series of contracts over a four-year period to conduct Internet research and to provide verbal advice over the phone to the former broadcaster on issues ranging from obesity to being a Conservative.
