OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he fired his chief of staff for bailing out Sen. Mike Duffy, a slight and possibly important change to the prime minister's story in the face of opposition attacks.

As recently as Thursday in the House of Commons, Harper said Nigel Wright "resigned" as his top aide for cutting a $90,000 personal cheque that Duffy used to re-pay ineligible housing expense claims.

Then, in a radio interview taped the next day, Friday, he said Wright was fired.
