OTTAWA - The Hull, Que., hospital orderly alleged to have verbally abused a dying war veteran has been punished for his actions.

Hull Hospital, however, refuses to say what type of "sanction" the employee received, saying only that he was disciplined before citing privacy laws in declining to provide further information.

Hospital spokesman Sylvain Dube confirmed to the QMI Agency Thursday the ombudsman had finished the investigation and a report was provided to the family of the late John Gervais, 77.

The veteran died Nov. 1 days after being transferred from Hull to the Elizabeth Bruyere Hospital.

Gervais' family said the orderly became enraged when some liquid from Gervais' tray fell on his shoe after the man had asked to be taken to the bathroom.

"This isn't a hotel. I don't speak English; this is Quebec,'" his family said the man was told.

While the hospital was quick to confirm the employee had been suspended with pay pending the investigation, they were much less forthcoming on Thursday.

"It's part of the employee's file, so I can't (say anything)," said Dube. "It's like a patient's file, same thing. I can't tell anyone what's in patient files (or) for an employee."
