For grieving widower Derwyn Shea, the bill was as mystifying as it was heart-wrenching.

The invoice, addressed to his wife, Julia, was for $1.783.67 – for a high risk, weekend or evening vaginal delivery of a baby at Ottawa General Hospital on June 24.

Sadly, though, Shea’s wife has been dead for almost four years. Were she alive, she'd be 75 years old.

Julia died of brain cancer in December 2009.

Getting the bill not only stirred up sad memories, it was almost impossible for him to fathom what had happened.

Shea, 76, a priest and canon in the Anglican church, tried to track down the physician whose name was on the bill.

Dr. Felipe Moretti was listed on the University of Ottawa website, but the phone number Shea obtained from the Ottawa General Hospital’s website turned out to be the kitchen.
