TORONTO - The coach is still in Mayor Rob Ford's corner.

But Don Cherry wants the embattled mayor to "straighten" up.

As people line up to find ways to try to bury Ford politically, the man who put the chain of office around the civic leader's neck at his swearing-in ceremony in 2010 said now's not the time to kick him.

"Sometimes this celebrity thing is not what it's made out to be and you gain a lot of enemies who want to hurt you," Cherry said Monday. "Sometimes it's no fun."

Ford, who last week admitted he smoked crack cocaine while in a drunken stupor and has alcohol issues, is not commenting on what help he is receiving. Those close to the mayor say he has met with several "health professionals," including a personal trainer and a medical doctor.

If this is true, Cherry said, he should be given some room to sort things out.
