TORONTO — Mayor Rob Ford admitted to council Wednesday that he's bought illegal drugs since being elected to the city's top office, but he repeatedly refused to take a leave of absence.

Ford was on the hot seat as council debates a motion from Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong that asks councillors to demand Ford take a leave of absence, apologize for lying to Toronto residents about his crack use, say he's sorry for writing a letter of reference for accused drug dealer Alexander Lisi on city letterhead, and co-operate with police investigators.

The first few hours of the meeting were so heated, council had to break twice for tempers to cool and Coun. Doug Ford ended up pulling the mayor back as he approached Minnan-Wong on the council floor.

During his questioning of Ford, Minnan-Wong asked the mayor if he has purchased illegal drugs in the past two years.

"Yes, I have," Ford said after a long pause.
