OTTAWA - The Prime Minister's Office dropped a Senate scandal bombshell Sunday night that could affect the RCMP investigation of bribery, breach of trust and fraud allegations against Sen. Mike Duffy and Nigel Wright, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's former chief of staff

While Harper attended a Jewish community dinner in Toronto, the PMO released a letter from bureaucrats who report to it.

In it, the Privy Council Office admits it was wrong to say that e-mails from former PMO lawyer Benjamin Perrin had been deleted after he left for a new job in March.

"We regret that we previously failed, even if inadvertently, to accurately inform you and the PMO of the availability of Mr. Perrin's e-mails," wrote Isabelle Mondou, assistant secretary to cabinet.
