An Alberta woman is dead and two children are in hospital after the family's minivan plunged into an icy river near Fernie, B.C., Sunday afternoon.
RCMP say a family of five from Coaldale, Alta., was in the minivan when it left the highway and went into the Elk River around 2:30 p.m. The van ended up on its roof in the river.
A passing motorist and his girlfriend pulled all five family members from the van, but police said the woman was pronounced dead at hospital.
A four-year-old boy was revived using CPR at the scene. Police said two of the children were taken to Alberta Children's Hospital by air ambulance with severe injuries. A man and one child were treated for minor injuries, including hypothermia.
The man who helped rescue the family was also treated for hypothermia.
Police said the highway was slushy at the time, although officers continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
