TORONTO -- City police mourned one of their own Monday as a constable who was seriously injured in an on-duty crash died in hospital.
Const. John Zivcic, 34, died shortly after noon, following a weekend west-end car crash that left him hospitalized for two days.
"He died in the line of duty doing his job, responding to an emergency call, trying to keep the public safe," Deputy Chief Peter Sloly said at a sombre press conference outside St. Michael's Hospital.
Zivcic was surrounded by members of his immediate family and his "police family" until the very end, Sloly said.
"This amazing family will still need Toronto's thoughts and prayers," he said. "They still have many difficult days and weeks and months ahead of them."
