AJAX, Ont. -- Durham Regional Police shot and wounded a 47-year-old man who witnesses say was naked.

The province's Special Investigations Unit is probing the 10 a.m. Monday shooting in Ajax, east of Toronto.

The wounded man was rushed to Rouge Valley Hospital with serious injuries. He was later airlifted to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto in critical condition.

Police were called to a street in the Westney Rd. N.-Williamson Dr. W. area for a disturbance.

Police confronted the man, who has not been identified, in the street and he was shot.
