Toronto Police are taking heat for not laying criminal charges against Rob Ford as new details emerge regarding what was known about the mayor’s drug use and other troubling behaviour.

But they maintain investigators are just being “cautious” and doing everything by the book.

“We need evidence,” spokesman Mark Pugash said Thursday. “And evidence is not hearsay or gossip.”

Given the information that has surfaced recently in wiretap information used to get a search warrant, he said he isn’t surprised many people — including some city councillors — feel the mayor is receiving special treatment.
