The question of Santa Claus' nationality is a lot more complicated than Canadian politicians would have you think.

"All of a sudden the Liberals are suggesting that Santa Claus is no longer Canadian and that they would abandon the North Pole and abandon Santa Claus," Tory MP Paul Calandra said in the House of Commons this week after the Liberals questioned the legitimacy of Canada's UN bid for Arctic sovereignty.

"Of course he is," replied Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau. "His postal code is H0H 0H0."

But Christmas lovers around the world beg to differ. More countries want to lay claim to jolly ol' St. Nick than to the North Pole itself.

The familiar elf also known as Sinkterklaas and Father Christmas in parts of Europe, with early roots in Turkey, and before that in pre-Christian pagan rituals, has become a sudden source of nationalism since Canada's claim.
