It’s never a completely smooth ride for Surfing Santa. But when he’s out in the middle of the Niagara River, halfway between Canada and the U.S., John Fulton said he’s “one with nature.”

Every year for the past 29 years, Fulton has donned a Santa suit to embark on a windsurfing trip across the Niagara River to the U.S. shoreline in Buffalo, N.Y.

He makes his journey to raise awareness of homelessness in the Niagara region and worldwide.

Fulton made the trek Monday afternoon, delayed from his expected morning start because of fog.

It wasn’t the first year that Fulton has faced a few challenges, along with the waves of the Niagara River. He’s also had run-ins with border patrol in the U.S., even being arrested one year for illegally entering the States.

He said the weather has always played a role.
