KINGSTON, Ont. -- An inmate who walked away from an east-end minimum-security facility Christmas morning turned himself in that night, calling police from a payphone and asking to be picked up.

Michael Bird -- who is serving a two-year, four-month, 15-day sentence for robbery at Pittsburgh Institution on Hwy. 15 -- was unaccounted for at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

At around 10:30 p.m., Kingston Police received a phone call from Bird, 41, who was in the city's west end and asking to be picked up.

The Toronto-area man called from a payphone, police said.

After being arrested and charged, Bird was sent to Quinte Detention Centre.

Correctional Service Canada will investigate the escape.
