The search for a 5-year-old New Hamburg, Ont., boy was called off late Thursday and police believe he may have fallen into a river.

Some of the boy's clothing was found near the Nith River in Waterloo Region, according to CTV Kitchener.

The boy was reported missing Thursday afternoon and an extensive search was launched involving police and firefighters aided by a hovercraft.

"Given the length of time ... obviously the situation isn't looking very promising," Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Mark Bullock told CTV.

The search ended about 10 p.m. and will resume Friday.

The boy's name was not released.
