SARNIA, Ont. -- Police learned Friday who's been behind hundreds of recent 911 calls.

A 10-year-old child who is hearing impaired and developmentally delayed was playing with an old phone, police said in a news release.

More than 360 calls had come into Sarnia police since Christmas Day, igniting concerns that someone was in distress. Garbled messages lasted only seconds, and police could only trace the cellphone to a one-kilometre radius.

The student at a local public school, who cannot speak, received an old phone from a parent. The SIM card was removed and the parent didn't realize the phone could still call 911, police said.

The child, police said, is interested in electronic gadgets.

An educational assistant realized what was happening after hearing a story about police searching for the mystery caller, and informed the student's teacher, who got into contact with police.

No charges will be laid, police said.

The emergency service, police said, is relieved no one was in any danger after all.

Officers also expressed gratitude for the investigation receiving widespread attention, and said they hoped this has been a learning experience for all cellphone owners.
