Two people are dead after a fire ripped through a home Saturday night in the municipality of Pontiac in western Quebec.

Police have not yet determined a cause of the fire, but it is believed to have started in the basement.

The two victims, a man and a woman, were renting a basement apartment.

The two owners of the home escaped uninjured and called 911.

MRC des Collines spokesman Martin Fournel said paramedics attempted to revive the woman after pulling her out of the home, but were unsuccessful.

Police say they know who the woman is but have yet to positively identify the man.

Neighbours said the couple had moved to the area a couple years ago but didn't know anything about the renters.
