Worker found dead at Suncor oilsands

FORT McMURRAY, Alta. -- Suncor Energy has confirmed there has been a death at an oilsands facility north of here, hours after an employee was reported missing.

According to the company’s emergency services, an employee was reported missing early Sunday and Suncor immediately organized a full-scale search of the area and notified Wood Buffalo RCMP and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.

Several hours after the search began, the body of the worker was found. Emergency personnel declared the worker dead at the scene.

The company did not release the identity of the dead employee.

The circumstances leading to the worker’s disappearance and death are being investigated by the company and police.

Suncor does not believe any other employees are involved and no other workers have been reported missing or harmed.

Suncor said it is co-operating with authorities and will assist in the full investigation.

"We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and co-workers. They are certainly in our thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time," Suncor executive vice-president Mark Little said in a statement.
