OTTAWA – Tory MP Rob Anders wants to bring the rape charge back to the Criminal Code along with heavy mandatory minimums – eight years for the first offence and 10 for any subsequent offences.

It’s a tall order, but Anders said the only reason he isn’t going further and suggesting something like chemical castration for convicted rapists is because he “has to work within the confines” of what’s acceptable in Canada.

“We did a disservice by taking the term ‘rape’ out of the Criminal Code,” he said.

The result, he said, is light sentences for sex offenders and the “tremendous injustice” of treating victims of these crimes “callously.”

Anders will table his bill later this month and expects some opposition, but said he already has some support from caucus members.
