OTTAWA — Canadian country music star George Canyon has saddled up for a political career.

The singer, who was active in Calgary's flood relief efforts, says he'll try to win the Tory nomination for the 2015 federal election in the new Alberta riding of Bow River.

"I was blown away by how well we all pulled together as a team while under the terrible stress of the flood crisis last year, the recovery of which is still ongoing," said Canyon in a statement. "I live in this community and these people are my friends and neighbours. It would be an honour to represent them as member of Parliament."

Canyon says he'll spend the next few months meeting Bow River residents.

The new riding is just east of Calgary and incorporates parts of the old Crowfoot, Medicine Hat and Foothills ridings - all currently represented by Tories.
