LONDON, Ont. - Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne announced Tuesday that the province is immediately putting $2 million into the battle to stop a piglet-killing virus from spreading in Ontario.

"I understand the seriousness of this virus, I understand its economic impact," Wynne told more than 1,200 participants in a telephone conference to update Ontario farmers on the outbreak of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED).

Wynne said the $2 million will go to Ontario Pork to strengthen bio security measures aimed at stopping the spread of the virus.

The Ontario government will also pay for lab tests of suspect cases, announced Wynne, who is also Ontario's agriculture minister.

"My heart goes to those producers whose herds have been affected by PED. I know this is a very difficult time for them and for you all," Wynne said.
