OTTAWA – Activists and opposition politicians called on the Conservatives to do more for the people of Ukraine.

About 100 protesters gathered on Parliament Hill Wednesday afternoon and applauded the government for imposing travel sanctions on some Ukrainian leaders.

However, Taras Zalusky, executive director Ukrainian Canadian Congress, and the organizer of Wednesday’s protest, said Canada should expedite visas for Ukrainian activists and increase its pressure on the Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich to resign.

“Dozens of Ukrainian activists have applied for asylum because they fear for their lives,” Zalusky said. “We are thankful for Canadian leadership; we would like to see more.”

The protesters were joined Wednesday by MPs from the NDP, Liberals and Conservatives in condemning Yanukovich and what is seen as his tilt away from western countries and into Russia’s sphere of influence.
