OTTAWA – The Liberals are catching up to the Conservatives in terms of political fundraising, and leaving the NDP a distant third.
While the Tories maintained a strong lead in dollars raised, for the third quarter in a row the Liberals collected the most individual donors of any federal party, as well as more people they can tap for future fundraising.
The improvement in Liberal fortunes coincides with the election last spring of Justin Trudeau as party leader, which party spokeswoman Andree-Lyne Halle told QMI Agency Friday “changed the game.”
In the first fiscal quarter of 2013 the Liberals collected $1.7 million from 22,684 donations, compared to $4.5 million from 38,610 donations for the Conservatives.
Since then, individual donations to the Liberals have surged.
