WINNIPEG - Mayor Sam Katz is suing the publisher of a student newspaper, a volunteer writer and the University of Winnipeg, after a column labelled him "the local political blunder" of 2013 and allegedly linked him to criminal behaviour.

The mayor's lawyer said politicians can expect public scrutiny, as the mayor has endured following news of the contentious fire hall replacement program.

But unlike other critiques, this particular column alleged criminal behaviour, clearly crossing a legal line, said Robert Tapper.

"The allegations that were made were outrageous," said Tapper. "To make the allegations that they did, they have to be brought to bear."

The mayor is suing author Josh Benoit, the University of Winnipeg and Mouseland Press Inc., which publishes U of W student paper The Uniter, for unspecified financial damages, according to court documents dated Jan. 28.

Mayor Sam Katz declined comment on the defamation suit since the matter is now before the courts. None of the allegations have been proven.
