WINNIPEG - Mayor Sam Katz says his main goal in suing a student newspaper's publisher and university is to see the record corrected.

Katz told reporters Wednesday he wants a retraction and apology from The Uniter, the University of Winnipeg's student newspaper, from his suit for unspecified financial damages.

"All we're looking for is basically a retraction and an apology, end of story," said Katz. "There is no financial compensation because you have to take a look at the entities. And, if you take out the University of Winnipeg out, there's nothing there. It's principle of 'Hey, the law is the law, you can't just say anything.'"

Katz said the defamation suit stems for after a December Uniter column appeared to link the mayor to criminal behaviour.

By noon Wednesday, the column had been removed from the student paper's website. The column title is now instead linked to a message explaining its absence.

"Because this matter is presently before the courts, this article is temporarily unavailable," the explanation states.
