QUINTE WEST, Ont. - A 1.5-kilometre stretch of Highway 401 west of Belleville, Ont., was littered with an estimated 115 cars and trucks as another major winter storm pounded the region Wednesday.

Quinte West fire Chief John Whelan said firefighters extricated four people from their vehicles.

He did not know the extent of their injuries, or the number of people taken to hospital. The injured were transported to hospitals in Belleville and Trenton, Ont.

The massive pileup happened just before noon.

Whelan said about 46 vehicles were involved directly in various collisions, while dozens of other vehicles were strewn over the wind-swept section of the highway.

"It was a huge chain reaction, a domino effect. In my 29 years on the job I've never seen this many vehicles involved with one accident," Whelan said.

At least six ambulances responded to the scene.
