TORONTO - Coun. Shelley Carroll warned Mayor Rob Ford’s refusal to take part in World Pride could lead to a backlash on the world stage similar to what Russian President Vladimir Putin is now facing from gay rights advocates.

Ford said Wednesday he will continue to skip Toronto’s Pride parade despite the fact the city is hosting the World Pride event this year.

Carroll — who hasn’t ruled out a run for mayor this year — called Ford’s refusal to attend the event “thinly veiled homophobia.”

“It’s so clearly his responsibility to attend — it’s the gig if you’re the mayor,” she said Thursday.

Coun. Doug Ford dismissed claims the mayor was “homophobic.”

But Carroll said Ford’s refusal to change will hurt the city in the spotlight of the international event.
