Despite a steady stream of grisly stories involving the killing of Canadian tourists in Mexico, Edward Kular never feared for his safety when he headed south to escape the cold weather.

A friend said the Scarborough senior, who was found brutally murdered along with his girlfriend at their second home over the weekend, had wintered in Mexico for many years and never experienced a hint of trouble.

“He was an easy-going guy who loved going down to Mexico every year,” Joe Duffy said Tuesday of his former neighbour. “He was never worried about danger at all down there.”

He and Kular both lived the same street in the Birchmount Rd.-Lawrence Ave. E. area about a decade ago and the retired printer often chatted about his life in Mexico.
