TORONTO -- A British comedian and transgender woman who was detained in a men's prison in Milton, Ont., for an immigration infraction will be allowed to return to the United Kingdom Thursday evening.

Avery Edison will be held at Vanier Centre for Women Milton until she can board a flight just before 10 p.m., her girlfriend Romy Sugden said Wednesday.

The ruling, made at an immigration hearing Wednesday afternoon, ends several days of struggle by friends, supporters and politicians to see Edison -- who has legally been a woman since 2009 but is pre-operative and has male genitals -- detained at a women's facility and eventually released.

"I am relieved, I'm thrilled," Sugden told QMI Agency. "It would have been fantastic if she could have proceeded with the trip as planned, but I did not think that would actually be able to happen.
